Connecting Deeply and Often
Starting a new year at Carolina means meeting a lot of new people, whether in your residence hall, in class, in pit or at the Union, and everywhere in between. Some connections happen quickly, while others take time. Building relationships is about showing up, being curious, and making space for connection again and again. The more often you reach out, the more likely it is that a casual interaction can grow into something meaningful.
Start Where You Are
Open the door to connection with a simple “How’s your day going?” in the dining hall, a comment before class starts, or a quick check-in with your roommate.
At Carolina, connections can start in ordinary places and small moments add up.
Keep Showing Up
Deeper relationships usually grow through repeated contact. That might mean going back to the same club meeting, attending office hours, joining an intramural team, or seeing the same people in a study group each week. Familiarity builds comfort, and comfort makes deeper conversation easier.
If you want to connect more deeply, try asking questions that go beyond the surface:
- What brought you to Carolina?
- What class or professor have you liked most so far?
- What do you like to do when you’re not in class?
- What’s been the best part of your week?
Curiosity is one of the best ways to build trust.
Be Open to Different Kinds of Connection
Not every relationship will become a deep friendship. Some people become study partners, some become workout buddies, some become the person you always sit with at a campus event, and some become lifelong friends.
Carolina is full of spaces where connection can happen:
- student organizations through Heel Life
- events during Weeks of Welcome
- games and activities through Campus Recreation
- volunteer opportunities across Chapel Hill and the Triangle
- conversations in your residence hall, classroom, or lab
You never know which connection will grow into something lasting, so be flexible.
Let Connection Be Imperfect
It’s normal if some conversations feel awkward or don’t go anywhere. Building relationships takes practice, and not every attempt will turn into a friendship. Keep going. The goal is to keep opening the door. Trust yourself and trust the process.
Remember You Belong Here
Carolina is a big place, but it’s also a community. The people around you are learning, growing, and hoping to find connection too. You do not have to wait for someone else to make the first move every time. A little effort, repeated often, can go a long way. Keep connecting!
