Naloxone Overdose Reversal Resources

Student Wellness partners with Campus Health Pharmacy and Student Stores Pharmacy to offer Naloxone Distribution.

Naloxone (Narcan), a life-saving medication that temporarily reverses opioid drug overdoses, is available free of charge, without a prescription, and anonymously at Campus Health Pharmacy, Student Wellness, and Student Stores Pharmacy during open hours.

Naloxone distribution resulted from student requests. Campus Care and Student Wellness partnered with a Health Behavior Capstone class in the Gillings School of Public Health, with support from the state-level NC Harm Reduction program, to create a naloxone distribution plan for the campus. The service aligns with pharmacies across the state of North Carolina after a standing order was issued by the state medical director in June 2016. This program was initiated through the UNC Parents’ Council grant funds, and it continues with the generous support of the Eli Beard Memorial Naloxone and Recovery Expendable Fund.

How to Administer Narcan

Naloxone interrupts an opioid overdose–– which includes morphine, codeine, oxycodone, fentanyl, methadone, heroin, and more – long enough to seek needed medical attention. Naloxone is available for anyone who requests it to assist a person (which may include themselves) at risk of experiencing an opiate-related overdose. Administration of the overdose reversing medication is simple and relatively risk free.

The first step in responding to someone who has an overdose is to call 911 and follow the dispatcher’s instructions, which may include giving naloxone. The North Carolina Legal Protections Related to Drug Overdose protects people who ask for help from 911, the police, or E.M.S. because they or another person is having a drug overdose.
