The first week of classes are behind your student and they are starting to settle into the real rhythms of college life. You might be noticing that calls and texts are getting a little shorter, or less frequent. Your student may sound busy, distracted, or still figuring things out. That’s all completely normal for this point in the semester. The transition from the structured excitement of move-in to the everyday demands of college takes time — for students and for families alike.
What Your Student Is Navigating Right Now
Week two of classes is when the reality of college life really begins to take shape. Syllabi are in hand, assignments are starting to pile up, and the social landscape is still forming. Some students feel energized by all of it; others feel overwhelmed. Many feel both at the same time.
When your student shares struggles or frustrations, acknowledging that this adjustment is real and takes time can make a big difference. Encourage them by reminding them that not having everything figured out yet is exactly where they’re supposed to be right now. Celebrate the effort they’re putting in, and let them know that reaching out for help — from friends, faculty, or campus resources — is a strength, not a setback.
The Next Few Weeks Matter — Encourage Them to Stay Engaged
With the semester just getting underway, this is a great time to encourage your student to put down roots on campus. Students who stay engaged on campus during the first six weeks of the semester — rather than heading home on weekends — tend to build stronger friendships, get more involved in campus life, and develop a deeper sense of belonging. Those connections often happen in small, unplanned moments that are easy to miss when leaving for a weekend. If you’re eager to see them, consider planning a visit to campus instead.
Conversation Starters for This Week
These open-ended questions can help you check in without putting your student on the spot:
“What’s felt easier than you expected?”
“What’s surprised you most about classes so far?”
“What’s been the biggest adjustment?”
“Who have you connected with when you need support?”
Resources are here!
Encourage your student to explore these tools for a smoother transition:
- The Learning Center has semester planning suggestions on “Calendars and College”.
- The Heels Care Network website can connect your student to supportive resources that best meet their needs.
- New Student and Family Programs offer ways for family member to engage with and support the Carolina community through programs, communications, volunteer opportunities and philanthropy.
We’re all rooting for your student’s success at Carolina—and for yours, too, as you navigate this exciting new chapter together.
