Thanksgiving Well-being

Thanksgiving week can bring a wide range of emotions for students and families. While the holiday often centers on gratitude, food, traditions, and connection, it can also bring stress, complicated family dynamics, homesickness, differing perspectives, or mixed feelings about returning home. Recognizing that students may experience the holiday differently can help families create space for meaningful connection and support. Thanksgiving can be an opportunity to practice gratitude, appreciate traditions both old and new, enjoy food without judgment, and strengthen relationships through curiosity, understanding, and community.

Check-in Together

Families can support students by recognizing that holidays can bring both joy and challenges. Create space for conversation by asking:

“How are you feeling about Thanksgiving this year?”

“What traditions are most meaningful to you right now?”

“What has been bringing you gratitude lately?”

“How can we make this break feel supportive and restorative for you?”

Encourage open conversations about expectations, traditions, and needs while remaining flexible as students continue to grow and develop their own perspectives.

Embrace Gratitude

Create opportunities to express gratitude together, whether through sharing stories, reflecting on meaningful experiences, or acknowledging the people who have made a difference throughout the year.

Food can also be an important part of connection and celebration. Families can help foster a positive food experience by focusing on enjoyment, nourishment, and togetherness rather than judgment or rules about eating. Finally, approaching conversations with curiosity, active listening, and respect for differing viewpoints can help strengthen relationships and create a welcoming environment where students feel heard, valued, and supported throughout the holiday season.
