Relationships play an important role in student well-being. Prioritizing healthy relationships and genuine connections with others takes work and thoughtfulness. Feeling genuinely heard and accepted is one of our most important needs. Providing empathy and acceptance is one of the most soothing things one can do for another. As students navigate new environments and experiences at Carolina, developing meaningful relationships with peers, communities, and themselves can strengthen their sense of belonging and overall well-being.
Listen well
Families can support students by reinforcing the importance of healthy relationships and helping them reflect on their experiences with others. To better understand your student’s perspective, ask questions such as:
“How are your relationships feeling this semester?”
“Who do you feel most supported by right now?”
“What does a healthy friendship or connection look like to you?”
- Encourage strong communication skills by modeling and practicing active listening—giving full attention, avoiding interruptions, and responding without judgment.
- Validate the importance of empathy and remind students that feeling heard and accepted is essential in all relationships.
- Support self-care and self-respect by encouraging students to check in with their own needs and boundaries.
- Reinforce that taking care of their physical, emotional, and mental well-being helps them show up more fully in their relationships with others.
