Getting through Challenging and Busy Times

As the semester comes to a close, many students are balancing exams, major projects, deadlines, extracurricular commitments, and preparations for academic breaks. While this time of year can bring excitement and a sense of accomplishment, it can also be one of the most stressful periods of the academic calendar. Students may feel pressure to perform well, manage competing priorities, and finish strong.

Understanding these challenges can help families better support their students as they navigate the final weeks of the semester. Maintaining balance through rest, movement, social connection, and self-compassion can help students sustain their well-being during demanding times. To better understand your student’s experience, ask questions such as:

“What feels most important for you to focus on right now?”

“How are you managing stress during these busy weeks?”

“What helps you stay balanced when you have a lot on your plate?”

“How can you break down your To-Do list?”

Families can support students by recognizing that end-of-semester stress is common and that students may not always have the time or energy to communicate as frequently as usual. When students share frustrations or concerns, acknowledge the effort they are putting in and avoid focusing solely on outcomes or grades.

Encourage them to break large tasks into manageable steps, make time for rest and movement, stay connected to supportive people, and practice self-compassion when things do not go perfectly. Remind students that asking for help is a sign of strength and that campus resources are available if they need additional support as they work toward the finish line.
