Failing Forward

At some point during college, many students will receive a grade, piece of feedback, or academic result that feels disappointing. These experiences can be discouraging, especially for students who are accustomed to high achievement. While setbacks can be difficult, they can also provide opportunities for growth, reflection, and learning.

Reframing Failure

Students may be tempted to view a poor grade or critical feedback as a reflection of their intelligence and abilities, which can lead them to doubt their future success. In reality, academic performance reflects a single moment in time rather than a student’s potential or worth.

A disappointing outcome often provides valuable information about study habits, time management, course expectations, or personal circumstances that may be affecting performance. To better understand your student’s experience, ask questions such as:

“What do you think contributed to this outcome?”

“What feels most challenging about this right now?”

“What might you try differently next time?”

“What resources could you use for help to improve next time?”

Showing Compassion

When students share disappointing results, acknowledge that setbacks are a normal part of learning and growth. Encourage them to focus on what they can learn from the experience rather than viewing it as a permanent measure of success. Families can also help students consider supportive next steps, such as attending office hours, connecting with professors or teaching assistants, forming study groups, or using campus resources like the Writing and Learning Center.
