Summer is almost here, and with it comes a shift in routines, environments, and daily habits. Whether you are heading home or staying in Chapel Hill, this time of year can bring a mix of excitement, stress, and change.
What is National Prevention Week?
National Prevention Week (May 10–16), led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is a nationwide initiative that encourages people to focus on preventing substance misuse and supporting mental health through everyday choices.
During times of transition like summer break, prevention is not about limiting your experience. It is about staying grounded, protecting your health, and setting yourself up for a summer that feels good and sustainable.
What You Can Do
Know your “why”
If you plan to use substances this summer, think about the following:
- What am I getting from this?
- Is it supporting how I want to feel or who I want to be?
- How does it affect my mood, sleep, energy, or relationships?
- Do I notice patterns in when I reach for it?
- Are there other coping strategies I want to try?
Be aware and set Intentions
You deserve to feel safe and in control.
- Know your limits
- Plan how you will get home
- Stay aware of your surroundings and your belongings
- Stick with people you trust and look out for each other
Stay connected
Even small routines can help you feel more grounded.
- Get outside or move your body
- Prioritize sleep when you can
- Build in time to reset
Transitions can feel isolating, even when you are busy.
- Check in with friends
- Stay in touch with people who support you
- Reach out if you need help
Be an Ally
Looking out for others is part of creating a safer, more supportive community.
- Learn about substance misuse and recovery resources
- Carry naloxone and know how to use it
- Consider taking a recovery ally or bystander training
- Check in on friends and step in if something feels off
Moving Into Summer
National Prevention Week is a reminder that prevention does not have to be complicated. It shows up in the small choices you make every day, how you take care of yourself, how you show up for your friends, and how you navigate new environments and experiences.
Small choices add up, and taking care of yourself now sets the tone for everything that comes next.
