When You’re Missing Something

Some days, you’re physically in Chapel Hill but your mind is somewhere else.

Maybe you’re missing family, a partner, friends from home, or the comfort of a place that feels familiar. Spring break can make that feeling stronger, especially if you’re staying on campus or your plans look different from everyone else’s.

That feeling makes sense. Missing something usually shows that thing is meaningful to  you.

It doesn’t always show up in obvious ways either. Sometimes it’s just having a hard time focusing, feeling weirdly unmotivated, or finding yourself scrolling through old photos. It can make classes and responsibilities feel harder because your emotional energy is stretched thin.

Find ways to stay steady while the feelings runs their course.

Ways to Stay Grounded When You’re Missing Something or Someone

A few small shifts can help bring your attention back to the present:

  • Create a routine for the week, even if it’s simple.
  • Schedule time to call or FaceTime instead of constantly texting.
  • Keep one comfort item nearby. A photo, hoodie, or familiar object work great.
  • Spend time in shared spaces instead of isolating in your room.

Structure and connection help a whole lot.

You Can Have Both

You can miss something and still build a life here. You can feel homesick and belong at Carolina. You can look forward to going home and invest in where you are now. These feelings can coexist.

Spring break can heighten loneliness, especially since campus feels quieter than usual. If you’re staying in Chapel Hill, try to build in a few social moments. Grab coffee with a friend, study somewhere public, walk around campus, or go to a local event. It doesn’t have to be a whole thing. Just being around other people can take the edge off loneliness.

If you’re traveling home and returning to campus feels hard, it can help to have something small to look forward to when you come back—a plan with a friend, a workout class, or a favorite study spot.

A Gentle Reminder

It’s okay to miss people and places. It’s okay to feel pulled in two directions. It’s okay to need support while you adjust. You’re building something at Carolina,  and that takes time.
