How to Make Friends

A Student’s Guide to Finding Connection at Carolina

Making friends in college can start slowly. Sometimes it’s awkward small talk in the dining hall. A quick hello on the quad. A group chat that turns into dinner plans. Some connections happen easily; others take time and effort. Both are normal.

Whether you’re still setting in or ready to branch out, these strategies can help you feel more connected and remind you that you’re not doing this alone.

Start by Showing Up

Community begins where people gather.
Try this:

  • Join one campus org that sounds interesting.
  • Attend an event, even if you feel a little awkward.
  • Keep going back — to that club, that rec class, that study group.

Connection grows with repetition. You don’t need a big or perfect plan, just a place to begin.

Break the Silence

Small talk can lead to solid friendships.

  • Ask someone if they’ve taken this professor before.
  • Comment on a class reading or the weather or the snacks.
  • Follow up with a message or invite.

People often want to connect — they just need a sign that it’s okay.

Stay Open to the Long Game

Strong friendships often build over weeks or months.

  • Some connections might surprise you. Some may drift. That’s part of learning who you click with.
  • Keep showing up as your full self — even when it feels uncertain.
  • Trust that the right people will find their way into your life.

When You Feel Lonely

Loneliness is a signal — not something to be ashamed of.

  • Take a walk through campus or grab coffee in a shared space.
  • Text someone you met recently.
  • Talk to a peer or mentor. Ask for help if you need it.

You are not the only one still figuring this out.

Care Creates Community

Friendship grows where people care. Ways to build connection through care:

  • Make room for someone new at your table.
  • Check in on someone who missed class.
  • Listen without judgment. Celebrate without competition.
  • Offer kindness freely, without needing a return.

Every small act adds to the larger community we’re all part of.

You belong here.

You don’t need to have everything figured out. Being real, curious, and willing to reach out is enough.
