Returning to the vibrant learning community of UNC can feel invigorating, but it's also normal to feel a mix of emotions. You might feel eager to learn or be yearning for the slower pace of summer. Be kind to yourself! Changes can be challenging.

To ease the process of switching over to campus life, consider these strategies:

  • Create a calming environment: Make an effort to nudge your spaces towards calm. Adjust lighting with lamps, add soothing scents with lavender or diffusers, and incorporate plants like bamboo.
  • Personalize your space: Whether on campus or at home, consider creating a personalized area that helps you feel connected. Hang inspiring posters or photos of people you adore.
  • Stay organized: Start strategizing now about how to keep track of all the elements of your academic and personal life this fall. What systems are going to help you most? Taking a few minutes daily to organize will make a big difference.
  • Prioritize sleep: Use an eye mask and earplugs to make sure you get quality rest, especially if the people around you have a different sleep schedule.
  • Nourish yourself: Stock some nutrient-dense and yummy foods at home and in your bag. Pick a few items you enjoy like nuts, seeds, fresh fruits, veggies (carrot sticks, celery, snap peas, etc.), protein-filled bars, peanut butter, hummus, yogurt, jerky, granola, oatmeal, and avocado.
  • Communicate well: Living and learning in close proximity with others requires good communication. Set expectations early on.

Remember, transition is a time of growth and exploration. By being mindful of your needs and the needs of others, you can create a positive and supportive experience for all.

We are thrilled to have you back on campus. Let's make this semester an unforgettable one that keeps health and well-being as a priority.
